Mourning the death of John Travolta…’s acting career 3

I was watching Look Who’s Talking? the other day and I struggled to choke back the back tears

…and they weren’t tears of laughter.

Ashamed to admit it but I was actually getting a choked up about the long lost good ol’ days of John Travolta

I must sound completely out of my mind… You’re probably thinking, “Aren’t you meant to be blogging about Google Trends, Elisa? I checked, John’s not on it today.”

If you’re thinking that, you’re right. Mr Travolta is not technically on Google Trends today and will probably never be again.

But I couldn’t swallow my pride deep enough to write a post about free Docker pants or Drew Brees son. So I desperately searched Hot Topics and found From Paris With Love, Travolta’s new film.

It was perfect.

I’d just watched Look Who’s Talking? John’s just released From Paris With Love and the critics have canned it (it currently holds a 34% ‘Rotten’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.com, which ain’t good)

… and it got me thinking (oh i sounded all Carrie Bradshaw just then) whatever happened to John?

In the ’80’s everyone loved John. He was a heart stealer in Grease, he was impressively cool in Stayin’ Alive, and sexy-in-a-daggy-husband sort of way in Look Who’s Talking?

But then he went from comedy legend to dodgy, and to be perfectly honest fat, movie loser.

This year he has tried desperately hard to crawl back onto the big screen.

So he did Old Dogs, which sounded funny…although he should have known  joining forces with also-washed-up-movie-star Robin Williams was never going to work.

A.O Scott from At The Movies said, ” It’s kind of a funny story. Actually it isn’t…. Unless you like to watch elderly dogs urinate, middle-aged movie stars overact wildly, and Seth Green get hit in the groin by a golf ball.”… and everyone agreed.

John just can’t win.

But he can’t have just lost his acting skills… can he?

So what is it? Has film comedy moved on from John? Rendered him obsolete? I’m heartbroken to admit that I think so.

Maybe John should retire. Hang up his acting boots before he becomes like Eddie Murphy… a sad joke with multiple children out of wedlock (OK so maybe I exaggerated the last point).

It breaks my heart to see him go, after all the good films he did, but it’s for the best.

… and Vince Vaughn? Watch out because you’re next.

I fell in love with John way back when he was a “Sweat Hog” and I was in seventh grade. He may be rather obsolete to Hollywood at this point, but I don’t think my 35-year love will ever completely end.

I know! It’s kinda sad that he doesn’t have that touch anymore. I loved him in Grease and I wasn’t even born when it came out. I hope he can make some kind of come back… I think he just needs to pick his movies more carefully!!
