Horsing Around 2
Today I got nothing. I am plum, yes plum, out of inspiration.
There’s something about the Bachelor being pregnant and the set list for Coachella 2010, which is all well and good… blah, not exactly riveting to write about.
But then I stumbled across Rachel Alexandra.
Maybe you’ve never heard of her, at least I think she’s a her.
She’s a horse… of course. Not any old horse though. Rachel Alexandra is the newly crowned 2009 horse of the year, which Wikipedia tells me is the highest honor given in American thoroughbred horse racing.
Who knew horses could win such titles? And how do you win it?
In my twisted head, I imagine a Miss USA style pageant where the best horses are the ones with the shiniest coat,
brightest teeth and possess some sort of amazing talent, like the ability to talk without the aid of peanut butter (If you were around today Mister Ed, I’m sure P.E.T.A would have had something to say about your treatment).
But of course, it’s not and I’m in enough trouble from angry blog-readers of the world that I’m not going to make any of my usual snide, sarcastic comments.
Instead, I find it impressive and slightly amusing that a horse could draw so much attention in the World Wide Web.
Rachel Alexandra was trained by Steve Asmussen, a man, who Wikipedia tells me, has trained the last three Horse of the Year winners… so good on you Steve.
Rachel herself didn’t score top Googling honours though, the phrase ‘Horse of the Year’ did, and it got to number 19, which is quite impressive for a horse I should think.
Somewhere out there, most likely in New York, there are people Googling ‘Horse of the Year’ in what appears to me to be as prestigious as, if not more than, the Golden Globes, which have dropped off the Google barometer.
It’s so random, it leaves me without an ending, especially one that doesn’t end with some sort lame horse pun like, ‘I bet those judges weren’t horsing around’…
But seriously, the more I write these blogs and the more I watch Google Trends, the more I realise that we’re really not THAT shallow.
Celebrity hasn’t entirely killed other interests, which is good.
