June 29, 2001My Stupidly Vivid Dreams(all of my dreams are extremely vivid and most of them are idiotic.)i dreamt last night i went to the Superbowl by accident. i was driving the Toyota Corolla station wagon my family had when i was a kid, and i had my now-deceased dog, Skipper, in the back. Skipper, by the way, was the greatest dog ever. so i'm driving down 880 or something and i have to get off the freeway because it narrowed to a point where i knew i couldn't pass through. as i get off the freeway i realize i'm near the stadium, and somehow i get stuck in the "this way to parking lot" lane. the parking security folks wave me imperiously around, and they don't seem to be able to hear me explain that i just want to get out. eventually, however, i park in a far corner of the lot and get out. Skipper sticks his head out of the window. and i'm right next to the stadium, and it's half-time, and they're performing "Aida," so i listen to it for a moment. i wake up with "Aida" in my head. June 28, 2001Insomniai finally saw the movie Unbreakable a couple nights ago on DVD. i had meant to go see it in the theatre when it was out, but it had slipped my mind. like most everyone else, i had really enjoyed The Sixth Sense, although i'd resisted seeing it (i think my sister finally persuaded me to go). anyway, Unbreakable was totally worth it and, if not quite as unpredictable as Sixth Sense, still extremely entertaining. Go see it, and then go read my review.sidenote: how happy am i to have a DVD player? how happy am i to have a Playstation2? answer: oh so very happy. when i was first longing for the console, back in the heady days of last fall, a lot of naysayers said $300 was too much to pay for a console. well, mmmmmaybe; but it you think of it as a console AND a DVD player, it's like $150 for both - a bargain! although i HAVE to get the remote controller for it, because it's a huge pain to operate with the PS2 controller. at the time, i was already dropping close to $500 bucks so i was like, "remote control? whatever." how little did i know. last night i was watching The Charlie Rose Show. (i almost always end up watching this as midnight - except i am usually pretty annoyed by Charlie; compare him with NPR's Terry Gross; she asks dumber questions but she lets the guest actually talk, while Charlie feels it necessary to interrupt just when the speaker is getting warmed up.) anyway, last night was intersting because it featured Jeff Bezos of Amazon and John Riccitiello of Electronic Arts. unfortunately i started to doze off a little during John's segment so no, i don't have new insights into the world of electronic gaming as i planned, but oh well. perhaps i'll watch it in reruns. and then i went to bed because a rerun of ST:NG came on that i've only seen like twenty times. it's kinda interesting, though, because it's about how a group of fanatics recreate the Klingon version of Jesus out of DNA extracted from holy relics. so then this big argument ensues over whether he really is who he is or just a "recreation", and what that means to the spiritual life of believers. i mean, at least the show is trying to be interesting, which is more than can be said for most TV shows. how cool is the world's best search engine? very fucking cool. what choo talkin bout everyonethe Funzo episode is on right now - you know him, he's "soft and cuddly - with lots of firepower!" i love this one, because i love advertising. i love the whole idea - of squeezing this incredibly potent message into a deft 30 second slice of image and sound. is it weird to hate commercialization and love advertising? |

![]() silly, fun, kinda interesting cinematic effects; paced like a videogame. The Rock is a decent comic actor as well as credible action hero. cool fighting scenes. ![]() in spite of some good performances, i couldn't get over the condescending tone. it's a classic case of straight guy pretending to be gay, getting the girl and a better job, and safely being able to declare that he's straight - and escaping thr real problems of homophobia. left me feeling a little icky. ![]() lulu gave me this book. it's magical. set in a fantasy industrial age new york city, suffused with mythology. ![]() a great game. scary. i can't play it unless jesse's home. even then it's hard. i make him play it so i can cower behind the blanket and tell him to watch out for the bad guys. yeah, i'm that much of a wimp.
